Just a Thought

Your watch is designed to withstand a reasonable degree of shock from impact. It is advisable to avoid rough usage, such as impact with hard surfaces, diving, or dropping of your watch. Dropping your watch or doing construction such as hammering nails can damage your watch. Purchasing a watch that is "Sport"rated can help. These watches usually say "100" or "100 meters" on the dial or case back and are sealed better than everyday watches. They usually have a much heavier case to protect the movement and a thicker glass.

Gold has since the dawn of time and its discovery, been treasured for its wonderfully rich colour, its weight and relative rarity. In its original form, it is a beautiful warm yellow colour that has led to its association with the sun, the Sun God, with warmth and well-being.

White gold jewelry is a hot fashion trend that doesn’t show signs of cooling off any time soon. Manufacturers are producing it, retailers are buying it, and consumers are demanding it, but none have a clear definition of what alloys can truly be called “white”—until now. A White Gold Task Force led by MJSA and the World Gold Council, comprising members of the supply, manufacturing, and retail components of the jewelry industry, has established a definition of white gold. After measuring more than 70 samples of 10k, 14k, and 18k white gold jewelry using the CIELab and ASTM Yellowness Index, the Task Force defined “white gold” as a karat gold with a Yellowness Index value of 32 or less. It also proposed a three-tiered grading system in which to categorize white gold as Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3.

Most of these certificates are 2nd class: they are selling what the trade does not want. The VS2’s are center black inclusions, the very good cuts on a 1.00 ct start at 6.25mm, the diamonds may have heavy fluorescence. Therefore, a combination of all the facts above decrease the value and the price of the diamond, not exactly a deal is it?

Trying to chase prices down the scale is what some stores that sell jewellery, discount jewellers and internet sellers do. Their suppliers have a price-point and a look in mind. In order to make those two factors happen, they make jewellery cheaper, thinner and with lower and lower quality gemstones in order to fit the price-point they’re after. This results in inferior jewellery products for those who are only interested in price point. We see tons of these items being brought in to us for repair everyday as they just don’t last. Some pieces can’t even be repaired.

No-one ever quibbles with Dentists, Orthodontists, Ophthalmologists, Chiropractors, Heart Surgeons, about their fee, even if they might not be all that good at what they do. Who knows? Who checks? You pay their fee or you keep suffering. You never ask your friends if they know a cheap heart surgeon. You ask if they know a brilliant heart surgeon. These professions are soaked in the assumption that their price is right. All the years of training each of these professionals has behind them is reflected in the cost of their services.

Diamonds have many unique properties, including natural fluorescence under ultraviolet light. One technique that jewellers use to help identify and separate diamonds from the diamond look-alikes (such as moisenite and cubic zirconia) is by putting the gem under a UV lamp. If it fluoresces (glows) blue, it is almost certainly a diamond. In fact, about 30% of diamonds have some degree of fluorescence under UV light
